Alcohol And Sexual Abuse Among British Teenage Girls
September 1, 2009 No CommentsThe BBC released two important articles today regarding the lives of teenage girls.
The first states that British teenage girls are drinking more than their male counterparts and that alcohol abuse is higher in the UK than among other industrialised nations.
The second states that many girls 13- to 17-years-old have been abused with 1/6 being pressured into sexual relationships and 1/16 having been raped.
These are both important studies and they are interrelated. Alcohol abuse is highly linked with people getting into sexual situations they would not when they are sober, and alcohol is often used to drug people so that they are more willing or less resistant to sexual advances.
I think that parents, teachers, and government departments need to work together to teach young people about sexual abuse, alcohol abuse, and how the two of these can go hand-in-hand.
Sex education in schools and teaching young people about these subjects is essential if we want them to have positive sexual relationships and happy sexual lives.
