Choose Life – And Give Me Your Baby
September 4, 2009 No CommentsCrisis pregnancy centres are pressuring new moms into giving their babies up for adoption. An article in The Nation looks at how these organizations lure new mothers in, persuade them against abortion, and then bully them into giving their kids up to “better” families.
Such enthusiasm for Christians to adopt en masse begins to seem like a demand in need of greater supply, and this is how critics of current practices describe it: as an industry that coercively separates willing biological parents from their offspring, artificially producing “orphans” for Christian parents to adopt, rather than helping birth parents care for wanted children.
The article goes on to explain how mothers these centres work in tandem with adoption agencies, where prospective parents can pay tens of thousands of dollars to adopt a child. The parents that seek help at these organizations are usually young and in need of assistance. These places take advantage of the financial and emotional strain to pressure them into choosing adoption. While the staff may genuinely believe they are doing right by the child, the conflict of interest here is blatant and shocking.
