Gay People Will Be Allowed In US Military

October 12, 2009 No Comments

President Obama is going to change the US Military’s current policy of “don’t ask, don’t tell” regarding gay people.

This change will allow people to serve while openly identifying as gay, whereas currently they are discharged from service if they acknowledge their sexuality.

The controversial policy has been criticized for years by the gay community.

“On the military issue he said the US could not afford to lose those people who had much needed skills for fighting.”

There has been much criticism and only time will tell when his many promises become reality.

I applaud this move; people should not be discriminated against based on their sexuality.

I only hope that programs will be put in place to teach tolerance within the military and discipline those that perpetuate homophobic behaviour. With the current culture I envision many people still being reluctant to disclose and many others facing discrimination and harassment, regardless of what the policies might be.

It’s a great step forward, but there is still a long way to go.
