Belle De Jour Exposed!

November 17, 2009 No Comments

Belle de Jour, the sex worker in London who wrote a book about her experiences, has finally revealed her true identity.

She is Dr. Brooke Magnanti, a researcher in Bristol on developmental neurotoxicology and cancer epidemiology.

Dr. Magnanti worked as a sex worker for 14 months to help fund her Ph.D. and has no regrets about her time as a sex worker.

Hopefully this revelation will shed some light on the world of sex work.

Although she was criticised for glamorising sex work she helps reveal the spectrum of experiences that people can have in that business. It’s not all human trafficking and drugs and there are some incredibly intelligent women working in sex.

Of course, there are some heart wrenching stories about prostitution, but it would be good if people learned to keep an open mind when criticising the industry.

Every woman involved in sex work will have had a different path that led her there. Often it is seen as a woman’s only option to make money and survive. Because of this it is important that people be less judgemental about these women and support them rather than stigmatising them.
