A Woman In Pants — That’s Criminal
November 22, 2009 No CommentsIt is against the law for women in France to wear pants, unless they are holding the reigns of a horse, or the handlebars of a bicycle.
Which means French policewomen are breaking the law.
The law initially came into force in 1800.
The Paris police chief who proposed it apparently had a problem with cross-dressing. The law stipulates that women who want to wear pants “must present herself to Paris’ main police station to obtain authorisation.”
In 1892 it was relaxes, and split legs were allowed in public “as long as the woman is holding the reins of a horse.”
France was going places in 1909 when it was ok for ladies “on a bicycle or holding it by the handlebars.”
In 1969 people petitioned the police chief to strike the law from the books. He replied: “It is unwise to change texts which foreseen or unforeseen variations in fashion can return to the fore.”
