Is Religion Just A Pick-up Line?

Romantic rivals are likely to make you feel more religious, according to a new study.

“We are proposing a new way to look at religion — as a strategy to advance evolutionary goals,” said researcher Yexin Jessica Li at Arizona State University.

The study of 269 college students looking at a dating website found that they were more likely to agree with the statement, “I believe in God” when there were more attractive members of their own sex.

As such, the researchers conjecture that people might become more religious when rivals are present since religion often involves rules that police sex. Alternatively, people might say they are more religious to be more attractive, maybe exploiting a different niche to find mates.

Which I take to mean that atheists are so attractive they don’t have to resort to cheap tricks to get a date.
