Man-hating Feminists Also Hypocrites
November 23, 2009 2 CommentsTwo new university men’s groups are coming under fire for daring to have meetings to attempt to answer the question. Apparently it is undermining feminism.
While women’s groups are de rigeur on campuses these days, men wishing to explore their own gender raises a few eyebrows.
The MENS (Masculinity Exploring Networking and Support) Society at Manchester University has been criticized because it’s very formation “undermines women’s ability to speak out for equality.”
The Man Collective — Oxford has been called “reactionary and ridiculous.”
The founder of the group Alex Linsley, summed up their ethos: “There is so much conflicting information for men. There is massive confusion as to what being a man means, and how to be a good man. Should you be the sensitive all-caring, perhaps the ‘feminised’ man? Or should you be the hard, take no crap from anybody kind of figure?
“Neither of those are particularly useful paradigms. But there’s perhaps things we could learn from both perspectives.”
The ridiculous group was started as a reaction to the rising number of male suicides on campus.
The MENS Society “raises funds and awareness for men’s mental health, testicular and prostate cancer as well as male rape and domestic violence issues.” Are they sexist? Perhaps we should ask their female members.
“Discrimination against men on the basis of gender is so unusual as to be non-existent, so what exactly will a men’s society do?” said the national women’s officer, Olivia Bailey.
“To suggest that men need a specific space to be ‘men’ is ludicrous, when everywhere you turn you will find male-dominated spaces.”
Olivia Bailey has no known qualifications as a man.

Glad to see someone is looking after men also! A pity Olivia Bailey cannot see the value of this.
I think this is a great idea for those men who want to join. There are a lot of stereotypes about men out there and I know some who have struggled with this their whole lives as they did not fit in with the typical stereotype they were supposed to. And this of course does not make them any less manly.
Working to educate people about rape among men and prostate cancer is great as well.
And sorry Ms Bailey, but there definitely is discrimination against men! All men are rapists? Men who like kids are pedophiles? Men who cry are wimps? Men who don’t like beer or sports aren’t manly?
Seriously…. feminism is about equality and this includes allowing men to express themselves without judgement or prejudice as well. (Mack)
