December 4, 2009 No Comments

A literary award has been given for ‘Bad Sex in Fiction’ to Jonathan Littell for his novel ‘The Kindly Ones’.

In spite of the bad sex the book was called ”in part a work of genius” and also won the Prix Goncourt in 2006 and sold over a million copies in Europe.

The committee ”hoped the author would take their dishonour ‘in good humour’.”

The passages that warranted this award were:

This sex was watching at me, spying on me, like a Gorgon’s head.

and

In one excerpt, the author describes a sexual encounter as “a jolt that emptied my head like a spoon scraping the inside of a soft-boiled egg”.
