Female Pandas Sing To Attract Mate
December 4, 2009 No Comments
Researchers have found that Giant Pandas sing to each other when the females are fertile.
Pandas are only able to conceive for a few days a year so calling to the males that they are ready for action is very important for this endangered animal.
Apparently the tone of their calls, or “chirps”, change pre- and post-ovulation.
Female giant pandas in a fertile stage would give longer calls that were characterised by a higher jitter and harshness, the researchers write.
The increased harshness of the chirps could indicate greater arousal levels, they say.
They said that human women do this as well. “He explains that rising oestrogen levels around the time of ovulation in females has been suggested to change vocal structures and vocalisation.”
Interesting. If only people could tell when women were ovulating by the tone of their voices it would certainly save society a whole lot of unwanted pregnancies and improve conception for many couples!
Lets hope this research helps with the preservation of pandas because they are just too cute to become extinct.
