BBC Wants Menopausal Women
December 21, 2009 No Comments
BBC has started recruiting for women over 50 after accusations of ageism against the company.
Looks like this could be a great opportunity for both ageist and “boys’ club” stereotypes to be dispelled.
BBC was told that “it was wrong that while many men over 50 presented TV news or current affairs programmes, women of similar ages were deemed unsuitable.”
So why does the news come out as an ageism story, rather than a sexism story when that is clearly what was going on based on the above quote?
Perhaps the public is tired of hearing about women complaining of unequal rights at work and wouldn’t pay attention if this line was used again.
Either way, I hope the women they choose are qualified and deserving of these roles. And I also hope that people realise that this is a sexism story and women do still have trouble finding equality in the workplace.
Although this aspect of the feminist movement has made great changes, there are still some places where the “boys’ club” exists and that does need to be addressed and changed. We’re not quite there yet…
