Blog For Choice Day 2010: Abortion Falling Into The Void
January 22, 2010 No Comments
When we trust we give up power. We close our eyes and fall backwards into the arms we hope are waiting to catch us.
For centuries women trusted the government to make decisions about our bodies, our livelihoods. We put faith in the system that we thought had our best interests at heart.
But then some of the choices that were made for us began to seem wrong. The people making the decisions just didn’t see the people getting hurt, the people dying. So we lost our faith in them, and with it our trust.
But we had a solution. We asked the government to trust us.
For 37 years, America has trusted women to decide what is best to do with their own bodies. And it is terrifying, like falling backwards into a void.
But trust calms the terror.
“Trust Women” was written on a button often worn by Dr. Tiller, the late-term abortion doctor who was killed late last year. The button was less about the law, that had already been changed, but was advice.
America should trust women. And although it is frightening to give up power, there is a calm in trusting the right person to make the decision.
