Marriage Education In British Schools
January 26, 2010 No Comments
With sensational headlines about sex lessons for five-year-olds and transsexual lessons for kids, it turns out that the school sex education programs in the UK will be as comprehensive and age-appropriate as most of us thought anyway.
That is, the school programs will “stress the importance of marriage and the challenges of parenthood”.
After all the flak that the British government got for introducing mandatory sex education in schools for students fifteen and over it looks like all the hype was about nothing.
Does this mean that the conservatives will stop worrying about the negative effects these programs will have on their kids and start supporting sex ed in schools?
I doubt it, but it doesn’t really matter.
The majority of people actually do support sex ed in schools and research shows time and time again that there are only a very small number who remove their kids from these programs.
Most people know that puberty is a good time to start explaining reproduction and sex comes a few years later.
They know that “sexual images on the internet, television or sent between mobile phones are putting pressure on children to be sexually active before they are ready, and may make them feel intimidated by the idea of sex.”
So long as the programs don’t just focus on marriage and include the idea of long-term stable relationships, plus give the kids what they want to know about sexual decision-making, they will do well.
Now all we need to do is get them to make it compulsory for 12-year-olds and up; fifteen is way to late.
