Dictionaries Banned For Sex Words

Yes, you read that right. Because a dictionary contains “oral sex” schools in a district of California have pulled it from the shelves.
This really is censorship gone mad.
The decision was made without consultation with the local school board, and parent reaction has been mixed, with some parents in favour, saying that the books shouldn’t be in use for young children (aged 9/10).
However, spokesperson for the school district, Betti Cadmus, added that a committee would be looking into the issue and that it would ”determine the extent to which the challenged material supports curriculum, the educational appropriateness of the material and its suitability to the age level of the students”.
This is a college-level dictionary and officials are saying that “a number of referenced words are age-inappropriate.”
Again, I can’t help but repeat, this is madness. Kids are constantly bombarded with sex and subjects they don’t understand or that aren’t appropriate for them from the tv, radio, and internet, not to mention from their peers or over-hearing their parents’ conversations.
It is up to the parents to explain to their children what is and is not appropriate and teach them values around sex education; banning dictionaries is going too far.
A group called California First Amendment Coalition, which is a non-profit dedicated to advancing free speech, says, “I think common sense seems to be lacking in this school.”
I totally agree.
