No Rights For Gay Men In Malawi
February 5, 2010 No Comments
Two men have been arrested in Malawi for putting up posters supporting gay rights.
The Centre for the Development of People has recently been formed “to fight for the rights of homosexuals and other minorities.”
This case comes soon after a gay couple in Malawi were arrested for “unnatural acts and gross indecency” when they attempted to get married. They could get up to 14 years in jail.
I think now and then it is important to take a look outside the western world we live in and see what other countries are like when it comes to human rights.
It gives a bit of perspective over how lucky we are to live in the west and maybe a bit of impetus to try and help in the fight for human rights in the rest of the world if we ever get the chance.
”The penal code [in Malawi] criminalises homosexuality or same-sex marriages but under the bill of rights in the new constitution it is clearly stated that no one should be discriminated against on the basis of – among other things – sexual orientation.”
Let’s hope universal human rights win over local law in these cases.
