Gonorrhoea Superbug Is On The Way

It looks like there is another reason to wear condoms!
There’s a possibility that gonorrhoea is becoming resistant to medication, will be harder to treat, and may lead to a superbug.
With untreated gonorrhoea leading to pelvic inflammatory disease, ectopic pregnancies, and infertility this is a very serious concern. It often doesn’t show symptoms so these results are quite likely if people don’t get tested regularly.
Professor Ison said: “Choosing an effective antibiotic can be a challenge because the organism that causes gonorrhoea is very versatile and develops resistance to antibiotics very quickly. The current drugs of choice, ceftriaxone and cefixime, are still very effective but there are signs that resistance, particularly to cefixime, is emerging and soon these drugs may not be a good choice.”
They are worried that this might mean multiple doses of treatment. This would mean not only more money spent in the health system, but the possibility that people will forget about the subsequent doctors visits. This would mean that they would only further increase the bacteria’s resistance to drugs and the creation of a superbug.
So readers, please, wear condoms and do not stop using them with a new person until you have agreed to be monogamous and both get a full sexual health screening.
On the other hand, the world is a bit overpopulated already so maybe a few superbugs and a dose of infertility would do us some good.
