Will British Kids Ever Get Sex Ed?
June 17, 2010 No CommentsLast year British kids almost got sex education as a requirement in their school curriculum from age 15. But it was dropped right before the election.
Now, a public health advisory group (NICE) has again said that sex education should start from age five.
It’s time to stop talking and get on with starting the program!
We all know that comprehensive sex education reduces unwanted pregnancies, the number of partners, increases age of first sex, and gives young people more confidence to resist peer pressure.
This has been proven again and again in research, so why are we still talking about it?
The NICE guidance wants to start with lessons on friendship and respect. They want to encourage parents to be involved and have discussions with parents as homework.
They also want lessons on alcohol to be involved which is great, because we all know that alcohol causes a lot of stupid sexual decisions.
None of this is news. Lots of other countries have these same lessons and have done so for years.
The problem with bureaucracy is that it takes so long to get anything done that today’s kids will probably be grown and married with kids by the time the lessons are official.
Parents and anyone who is interested should encourage the government to get off their butts and make it happen.
With the high rates of unwanted pregnancies and STIs in the UK I am amazed that this hasn’t happened sooner.
Let’s hope that this time it will be more than just talk and kids will finally get the education they deserve.
