Virtual Sex Game Teaches American Teens How To Just Say No
July 27, 2010 No CommentsWhen an awkward situation arises do you ever wish that you could stop time, figure out how to respond, and then deal with it?
Educators are developing a virtual sex game to teach girls how to fend off advances. Using a motion-capture suit, they will be placed in situations and will earn points for the social skills that they develop.
“They have an opportunity to interact with the avatars and they’ll earn points for particular social skills that they develop,” said professor Anne Norris, who is working on the program out of the University of Central Florida.
“A boy similar in age might approach the person playing the game and ask her to make out or there might be some sexual innuendo.”
It’s good people are looking a different ways to help teens through these difficult decisions. But it does bring up some questions:
- Why are only girls being taught sexual social skills?
- What about advances from their same-sex friends?
- What amounts to a good social interaction, and who decides what the correct response is in each situation?
- What if a girl wants to accept his advances, will she fail the course?
It’s weird to see such a futuristic technology being used to promote the same old fashioned mores about sex — Girls need to guard their sexuality, not explore it.
