Is Herpes The Cure For Cancer?
August 2, 2010 No Comments
Herpes is one of the most common sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and once people have it they are stuck with it for life.
Now it looks like this virus might hold the key to a cure for cancer!
Doctors at the Institute of Cancer Research in London have used the herpes virus to attack and kill cancer cells from the inside.
The herpes was “genetically manipulated so that it grows inside tumour cells but cannot infect normal healthy cells.”
In addition to the normal chemotherapy and radiotherapy this has been done successfully on seventeen patients with head and neck cancer (head cancer? Bet you’d never heard of that).
Of course, as with most cures for diseases, this is still being trialled and will be a while before everything is finalized.
But who would have thought that one of the most common and frustrating STIs (with about one in six adults having it!) could be the answer we have all been looking for to cure cancer?! Amazing.
