Fired For Not Telling Boss Her Weight
August 6, 2010 No Comments
How far can an employer go in collecting personal information about its employees?
One woman found out when she was fired for failing to disclose her weight!
Lisa Bonifas was asked various questions needed for her ID card and used to identify bodies in case of disaster.
She says she refused on principle because it was none of their business. And it’s not illegal either according to the US Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. But it is considered “insubordination” and obviously her employer considered it grounds for dismissal.
This is just madness. Her weight is not relevant for her job so there is no reason to ask and certainly no reason to fire her for it.
If she was, for example, a firefighter who had to keep fit in order to rescue people from burning buildings, then maybe it would be fine. But she was a librarian (and had worked for the company for two years already when this happened!).
I certainly hope she files a wrongful dismissal case because somebody needs to teach them a lesson.
