British Rev Says Weddings Ruin Marriages — Could He Be Right?

The wedding industry is greedy. This idea that people need to spend thousands of dollars on one day is absurd.
Weddings should be less about how much money people can spend and more about finding unique ways to celebrate love.
British Rev Fraser spoke on a radio show about how weddings now lack dignity, moral seriousness, self-sacrifice, and their materialism is a threat to the marriage itself.
I agree that they have become too materialistic (apparently the average cost is over $30,000!!). And I guess I can see the point about weddings being a threat to the marriage, but unlikely. If the couple puts too much emphasis on the wedding day but forgets about the marriage itself, that might mean they don’t plan ahead to anticipate what the rest of their lives will be like.
One psychologist even goes so far as to say that the reason people spend so much money on weddings is because they are unsure about the marriage and overcompensate.
As much as I agree with them about the materialism, I certainly don’t think self-sacrifice, dignity or moral seriousness should have anything to do with it.
They are celebrations, as much as the Rev disagrees. There’s nothing wrong with wanting to celebrate your union with friends and family. In fact, if you don’t want to celebrate then maybe you shouldn’t be gettting married at all.
