Conservatives Want To Increase Cervical Cancer
September 1, 2010 1 CommentAt least that’s what the end result will be if they prevent young girls from getting the HPV vaccine.
HPV is a genital warts virus and it leads to over 70% of cervical cancers.
There has been much controversy over girls as young as 12 getting this vaccine, and the most recent attack comes from the fact that parental permission is not required.
Opponents warn that “It is sending out the message that girls under 16 have a right to a private sex life and is treating parents with contempt.”
But there is good reason for this. Girls under 16 do have sex. It’s not that common but it does happen. And they probably don’t want to tell their parents about it.
I’m sure if their parents knew about this they would be pleased that their daughters are taking responsibility for their health by getting a vaccine.
And doctors don’t just hand out medication willy nilly to young girls; they work under strict guidelines. The Fraser Guidelines state that if someone under age shows maturity and the ability to make informed decisions, does not want to tell their parents, and are doing something that warrants them getting the medical treatment, then the doctors are allowed to give them the treatment.
Seems sensible to me. I just wish those adult conservative naysayers would show as much maturity as the 12-year-olds.

If I were a conservative, I would want to deny reality as fervently as I could too.
