This Movie Takes The Sex Out Of Sluts

September 2, 2010 No Comments

Being a slut isn’t good. Girls are told to guard their reputations before they even know what they are guarding against.

But the fact is that as soon as our hormones kick in we want to do the nasty, even if some of us wait longer than others.

Horny teenage males have been immortalized in film since the 1950s. We laugh at the gauntlet they run trying to lose their virginity, and then cheer when they are finally able to pop that cherry. They are now men.

A new movie — Easy A — sets The Scarlett Letter in a high school. This is a great opportunity for Hollywood to normalize randy teenage girls, but as usual, they drop the ball.

Because Hollywood must have a virginal lead, this heroine doesn’t actually have sex at all, she just fakes it to make her male friends seem cool.

This is what earns her The Big A, as well as a bad reputation.

Despite this there is a boy that actually wants her at the school, but the film takes pain to note that he knows that she is still a virgin.

When she learns that her mother engaged in teenager antics she is like totally grossed out.

In a way this film fulfills a lot of the promise of The Scarlett Letter by showing the inherent hypocrisy in society — if only it were intentional!
