Yes, Opposing Same-Sex Adoption Is Bigoted

September 2, 2010 No Comments

When a Christian organization says “opposing same-sex adoption is not bigoted” you know they must be bigoted.

Bigoted means being prejudiced, biased, or forming opinions without cause. Assuming that all same-sex couples will be bad parents and that the children would not thrive in these families is quite obviously forming an opinion without cause.

Have they met the parents? Interviewed them? Examined their lifestyle? Every couple and every family is different and the best we can do for the children is allow couples of all shapes and sizes to apply for adoption, examine them thoroughly, and see if they fit the bill.

This has recently come up in New South Wales, Australia where they are attempting to change the adoption laws. The opponents of allowing same-sex couples to adopt think they have good reason to do so.

A submission by Anglicare Sydney noted that research on same-sex carers had been affected by both methodological flaws and ideological debates. Anglicare Sydney concluded that, in the best interests of children, the state should err on the side of caution on adoption – even more so in areas where research, at best, appears ambiguous.

They want adoption to be in the best interest of the child and want research to back this up before the rules are changed.

The problem with this is that research always has flaws. What has to be done is look at all of the research overall and see what trends come out.

Anglicare says that “no one has the right to adopt.”

I completely agree and I’m sure that the adoption agencies agree as well.

But the point is that we can’t block all same-sex couples from adopting. Some of them would be amazing, wonderful, nurturing parents. Others would be crap parents. But this is no different from straight couples.

Anglicare then contradicts itself by also saying “The only relevant consideration ought to be whether same-sex adoption is in the best interests of the child.”

Well no kidding! That’s the whole point of couples going through the adoption process before they are allowed to have children.

So long as each family is investigated, and no couples are blocked outright, then the rules behind what type of lifestyle and income, etc that a couple needs to have will stand up to the adoptionĀ approval tests, regardless of the sex of the parents.
