Racist (?) Anti-Abortion Billboard In Texas
September 3, 2010 No CommentsIs an abnormally high reduction in the number of children born in your own race considered racist or genocidal? Or are you simply looking out for your family by allocating resources and making sure every child is wanted?
A controversial billboard in Texas proclaims “Black & Unwanted” with a photo of a sad Black baby’s face and the website of the billboard creators underneath.
They are using this slogan because an abnormally large portion of abortions in Texas are done by African-Americans. Their total population is 12.5%, but they account for 25% of abortions.
The creators of this campaign are the Radiance Foundation and they aim to ”expose the destruction of hope and possibility that abortion brings and offer something that is a life affirming solution like adoption or parenthood.”
I suppose they are trying to reach out to African-Americans because they have an abnormally high chance of having an abortion when compared to the rest of the population. In a sense they are the most “at risk” group, at least from the perspective of Radiance. On their website they even go so far as to say that “Black children are an endangered species”.
But Billboards like this don’t do anything other than provoke hatred and fear-mongering. Extreme ideas are more likely to push people away than engage them. You are much more likely to win over an audience if you can appeal to some kind of mutual understanding.
Instead to telling African-American’s that they are not doing the right thing and will go to hell for killing their babies, they would be much better off showing a picture of a happy family with a newly adopted child.
It probably wouldn’t change anybody’s mind, but at least the insane accusations of genocide could stop.
