Small Brothels Okay For Taiwan
October 15, 2010 No CommentsTaiwan used to prosecute prostitutes, but not the Johns. Now their government has gone in the other direction by allowing small brothels of three to five staff so long as they aren’t near areas with children.
They rejected the proposal for an official red light district or for larger brothels, but I guess the small ones seem kind of okay.
Although I fail to see the difference. Whether it’s five or fifteen, what goes on inside is still the same. And people will find a way around it. The same people will set up separate businesses in similar locations, which will essentially turn into some kind of red light district.
But maybe one already exists. Apparently, “bars and night clubs in older parts of Taipei still teem with sex workers” and it’s estimated that there are up to 600,000 sex workers in Taiwan.
So other than stopping persecuting sex workers (which is a good thing), I fail to see why they are bothering with this.
