The Wise-Cracking Wisdom Of The Aged
October 21, 2010 No CommentsGray-haired grannies are often overlooked by Hollywood. Used as props for family settings, they are hauled out for Christmas movies and then dusted off and put away until next season.
That is, until now.
Suddenly these venerable women are popping up everywhere — and we can’t get enough of them.
It started when Betty White was asked to host Saturday Night Live.
She as long made a career out of being the slightly spaced out old lady who sees things are they actually are, and isn’t afraid to say it. People have criticized her act as being patronizing to the elderly, but her characters are always more with it than anyone else.
Recently she has appeared in several movie roles and is credited with giving the new(ish) show Hot in Philadelphia some much needed pizzazz.
Another woman who has recently hit it big on the the small screen is Joan Rivers. Every year she mocked the dresses of the stars as they walked down the red carpet, and everyone mocked her.
Then she got on The Apprentice and was suddenly a force to be reckoned with. Her once yearly show has been given new life, and a slot once a week called Fashion Police.
One woman is sweet and the other is decidedly salty, but what both have in common is the ability to cut through the bullshit.
Girls are told to be sweet and smile, and many do for most of their lives. Then, when menopause hits, the desire to please others seems to melt away.
The reason we love watching these women is that they say what we long to.
It is as if with the wrinkles, saggy boobs and gray hair these women also develop strong muscles in their middle finger, which they proudly hold up to the world.
