Sexy Glee Photo Shoot Causes Controversy
October 21, 2010 1 CommentGlee is one of the most popular shows on television at the moment, and as often happens when shows are so popular, they get to do photo shoots for big magazines. As also often happens is shows about high school, the actors are actually in their late-twenties, rather than mid-teens.
This has led the Glee cast to a conundrum of controversy.
They recently did a sexy photo shoot for GQ magazine, a magazine whose market is adult men. The girls are posed in short skirts with pouty lips, lollipops are suggestive of oral sex, and women are shown stripping off school uniforms and spreading their legs.
The Parents Television Council is crying pedophilia and says ”this is just the latest example of the overt sexualization of young girls in entertainment.”
GQ doesn’t see the problem. The actors are of age, the show has a huge adult following, has dealt with serious grown-up issues throughout, and GQ is not marketed at teenagers.
But do the young people know this? Will they look at the pictures and think this is okay behaviour for people in high school?

I like to think that regardless of their age in real life, the show has a responsibility to behave in an age-appropriate way for the characters. This might be difficult, and it might lead to less sales of magazines, but isn’t that the point of role models?
On the other hand, young people are exposed to so much media these days, will one little photo shoot (targeted at adults) really make a difference?
But my real beef is, why is it just the girls in sexy skimpy outfits while the boy is fully dressed from head to toe?

A little bit of equality (read: male nudity, or at least some sexy poses) would have been nice. The men on the show are just as sexy as the women, and, although GQ is aimed at a male audience, I’m sure female partners and gay readers would have appreciated something that shows the men as sexy rather than just dorky school kids.
Here is a great example I found. Do you think maybe GQ is just jealous and can’t handle the sexy Glee men?
