When Getting The Bill Doesn’t Add Up
November 5, 2010 No CommentsOn dates I still love a little bit of chivalry — but it goes too far when the restaurant servers decide that my male dining partner should get the bill.
The assumption that the man should pay in the restaurant is archaic. The waiters don’t know what our relationship is and any assumption is just that, so why do they so often put the bill in front of the man?
Maybe I’m the sugar mama. Maybe we’re brother and sister. Maybe we’re just friends. Or maybe we really are one of the few couples in which the man pays for everything, but chances are we’re not.
In fact, sometimes, even when I am the one who asks for the bill and I give them my credit card, they still they want the guy to sign for it!
When I worked in restaurants I always made sure to put the bill smack in the centre of the table, that way no one was offended. Give the bill to the man if he’s the one who asks for it, sure, but to assume he’ll pay is just sexist.
If you think my money isn’t good enough for you — don’t worry, you’ll never see it again.
