Teens Getting Pregnant For Chance To Be On TV

December 8, 2010 No Comments

Do young girls seriously think that getting pregnant will bring them fame and fortune?!

Apparently some girls are getting pregnant on purpose to be on reality television shows about teenage motherhood. They seem to think this 15 minutes of fame is worth a lifetime of responsibility and sacrificing their independence and youth.

MTV runs shows such as “Teen Mom” and “16 and Pregnant” and these girls are helping them increase the so-called “talent pool” they will choose their “stars” from.

One relationship expert says,

  • The sad state of reality television has created a lowbrow vehicle for untainted train wreck personalities to display their private lives. Getting pregnant to be famous is like eating as many cockroaches as possible in a one minute period.

And Rabbi Shmuely Boteach says this “shows the moral rot in American society” and thinks that now, instead of these programs “exploiting people’s problems” they are in fact creating the problems.

This might be true to a point, but in the end a girl would have to already have serious family and relationship issues to think that this might be a way to ahead in life.

It’s the parents and the families that are causing these problems, television certainly doesn’t help, but it’s not the root of the problem. Working to reduce poverty, improve education for parents and young people, and teach young people sex education would be the best way to help these girls.
