Pro-Life Worker Suspended For Sharing Beliefs
December 22, 2010 No CommentsA woman has been suspended from work as a psychological wellbeing practitioner for talking to colleagues about how damaging she believes abortion is to a person’s mental health. She also was sharing a booklet with them that talks about “post abortion syndrome.”
She will face the possibility of being reassigned to an area where she is not working with patients and is being charged with “distributing materials some people may find offensive.”
Margaret Forester is a Roman Catholic and thinks the National Health Service is not giving patients the whole truth around the after-effects of abortion. But she was only talking with colleagues about her views, and never had this conversation with patients.
She says, “I don’t think I have done anything wrong, personally or professionally.”
And she hasn’t. She was merely expressing her beliefs that abortion can cause problems for women. The fact that she didn’t discuss this with any patients shows that she knows the rules of the clinic and knows what she’s supposed to do. There’s nothing wrong with that (morally or legally), as much as others might disagree with her views.
Yet, she still will face the tribunal because her beliefs don’t match those of the company she works for. Clearly the moral of the story is that if you work in health care and are pro-life, keep it to yourself or get a different job.
