“My Medication Made Me Gay!”
February 1, 2011 No CommentsA French father-of-two is claiming that his Parkinson’s medication turned him gay.
He is suing GlaxoSmithKline for not warning him about the drug that he claims made him addicted to internet gambling and sex with men. His lawyer claims that some of these encounters led to rape.
In 2003 he began taking the drug and when he stopped taking the drug two years later the behaviours suddenly stopped. However, in the interim he was demoted from his ministry of defense job.
The medication, Requip, is known for causing “increased sexual urges, unusual urges to gamble, or other intense urges.” However, there is no precedent for a medication changing someone’s sexual orientation.
Taking on the role of an arm chair psychologist, I would say that he was either in the closet or in denial about being attracted to men and the drug merely increased those urges. But if a chemical compound can turn someone gay (or straight) that would change the landscape of gay rights in a big way.
