I Like Girls Who Play Sports And Boys Who Dance

March 8, 2011 No Comments

There’s nothing wrong with girls who play sports or boys who dance.

In fact, the two aren’t really that different from each other.

They both involve balance, physical conditioning, partnering or team work, discipline, perseverance, and a competitive streak in personality.

Most of the time girls who play sport are not treated too badly. We encourage girls to get involved in sport as a way to stay fit and learn about team work.

There’s still some who are blamed for being too masculine either in personality or physicality, which is ridiculous. We don’t know how feminine a woman is just by looking at her muscles or her sports abilities.

But in additon to that, who cares how feminine she is? Everyone has their own gender identity and we shouldn’t impose our ideals onto them. If they are happy playing sports then they should play sports.

But for the boys who dance, oh boy, will they be in trouble. There are the acceptable genres of break dancing and hip hop, but as soon as a boy deviates from that he will be ridiculed by his peers. Dancing is only for boys who are gay, right? It’s not possible to be masculine and also be a dancer, right?

This is wrong on so many levels. First of all, there’s absolutely nothing wrong with being gay. Secondly, boys don’t have to be masculine if they don’t want to and it has nothing to do with their sexual orientation. And finally, men who can dance can be super sexy and super masculine if they want to.

I have dragged the men I’ve dated to dancing classes and clubs countless times. There’s nothing sexier than a man who can dance and I know most of my female friends will agree with me on that.

Instead men are taught that it’s just something that girls do and they should try to get out of it if they can. Don’t get me wrong, I know several men who love to dance and do it well and it’s damn hot. If only this attitude were more widespread we’d have a lot of happier people. In fact, this seems to be a western problem. In Latin America and many European countries men who dance are far more normal.

One good example of the problems boys face is a scene in the So You Think You Can Dance television series. The judges said that one of the male dancers was the reason little boys learn to dance. He was full of tears after hearing that; it justified all the hardships he’d gone through growing up as a boy in the dance world and he was so happy to have his career choice validated. Luckily with shows like this the prejudice against dancing boys is hopefully becoming less.

If only there were less prejudice on boys who dance I know me and a lot of my female friends would be very happy women. And the men would be happy to because dance is fun and keeps you fit.

It’s time we stopped judging people for their hobbies, gender expressions, and professions and let them enjoy the wonderful worlds of sports and dance without prejudice.
