Porn Studios Are Sillies, Fined For Not Wrapping Willies
March 31, 2011 No CommentsTwo porn producers have been fined by California regulators for filming condom free porn.
Larry Flynt’s Hustler Video was fined $14,175 for three violations. The Division of Occupational Safety and Health also fined Forsaken Pictures $12,150 for similar infringements. The complaints were brought by the AIDS Health Foundation.
Presently, porn studios are required to maintain the same standards for their employees as hospital workers — that is, they are required to protect their workers from pathogens. However, they are allowed some discretion as to how they fulfill that obligation.
“Clearly if an employee is having unprotected sexual contact with another person then there needs to be either engineering control, like simulation, or people need to use a condom or other barrier,” said Cal/OSHA Senior Safety Engineer Deborah Gold.
The production companies have pushed against mandatory condom use primarily because they are less popular with consumers.
“We won’t budge when it comes to condomless productions,” said Michael Klein, Larry Flynt Productions President. “That’s what the consumer wants, and we deliver it.”
Many porn stars have rallied against mandatory condom use, with complaints of discomfort and chaffing. But there are less vocal performers who think that the regulations could protect the performers who don’t have as much sway as others. As one anonymous porn actress said: “You do worry about the risk, but any girl desperate for money, like I was, is still going to do it.”
No job should be willing to expose its employees to disease. All that is requested are some basic standards of safety — you wouldn’t let a construction worker on site without his hard hat on, so why would you let a “construction worker” on set without a hat on his hard-on?
