UN Urges Divorce In Malta
April 4, 2011 No CommentsDivorce and the rights of women to property and even remarriage don’t exist in Malta. The UN Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women is urging that this be changed.
Specifically they want “to introduce and support vigorously legislation which permits divorce, allows women to remarry after divorce and grants women and men the same rights to administer property during marriage and equal rights to property on divorce.”
The UN has been evaluating the state of this country for a while and they come up very lacking. There are major wage gaps between men and women, women do all the domestic work, there is a lack of sexual and reproductive rights, and violence against women is high.
Hopefully the UN can have some influence and groups like the Malta Confederation of Women’s Organisations can make things happen.
Everybody should have the right to decide when and where their relationships both start and finish. People may not agree with divorce, but without it women are simply property shackled to their husbands, homes, and children.
