Hormone Gel Prevents Premature Birth
April 7, 2011 No CommentsGiving women with a short cervix a hormone gel from weeks 19 to 23 of pregnancy can prevent premature birth and breathing problems in the infant.
Women with a short cervix are more likely to have premature birth, and it was assumed that these problems were from a lack of progesterone. Looks like they were right!
This treatment reduced premature births by 45 percent and respitory distress syndrome was half as frequent (3 percent) compared to the placebo group (7.6 percent).
This study was part of the background research for two pharma companies to apply for approval of the drug, so perhaps it should be taken with a grain of salt. Either way, these results seem good and could be very helpful for women and babies at risk.
