Feminist Porn Awards Tonight In Toronto
April 15, 2011 1 CommentCome one, come all to the Feminist Porn Awards.
Toronto has been flooded with sex-positive messages for gay and straight, women and men, and everyone in between as the Feminist Porn Awards enters its sixth year.
The celebrations kicked off on Wednesday night with a launch party at the Gladstone Hotel, featuring screenings of Maybe He’s Gifted, by Lander and Charlie, and Picnic in the Rain, by Sam Martin. Porn star Sophia St. James and DJ Sasha Van Bon Bon provided further entertainment.
Workshops and Q&A sessions with the biggest names in feminist porn have been running throughout the week.
Tonight is the official awards ceremony with international filmmakers hoping to take home the titles of: Sexiest Straight Film, Hottest Trans Scene/Film, Most Deliciously Diverse Cast, Best Porn Website and many others.
The awards were started to show that it is possible to be a good feminist who loves porn:
- At Good For Her, we are feminists and we sell and rent porn. In 2006 we decided that it’s not enough to criticize adult films for not adequately representing women’s – and in many cases, men’s – sexuality. So we decided to do something about it… We believe the world is inundated with cheesy, cliche, degrading, and patronizing porn. But we also believe that erotic fantasy is powerful, and that women and marginalized communities deserve to put their dreams and desires on film, too. As feminists and sex-positive people, we want to showcase and honour those who are creating erotic media with a feminist sensibility.
The group is adamant that they do not discriminate against men, as they believe many men appreciate a different perspective on porn.
“We know that there are a lot of men who are sick of the same formulaic porn being shoved down their throats like it’s the only thing that exists.”
It’s encouraging to see porn being made and celebrated that acknowledges the desires of a female audience.
Goodbye bukkake, deep throat, gangbangs, strangulation, gonzo, rape fantasies, scat and necrophilia.
And good riddance.

Great article Brianna! I, too, am a fan of feminist porn.
I do have to say though, not everything you say “goodbye” to is bad.
There’s nothing wrong with bukkake, deep throat, group sex (yes, take out the rape aspect of course), strangulation, gonzo, or scat. So long as the women involved enjoy it then they should be able to access this at home and in the porn they watch.
Everyone has different tastes, and it’s important we don’t assume others like only what we like. Sex-positive also means being non-judgmental about others. As long as it harms no one, there’s nothing wrong with a bit of kink.
