Men Are Better Cooks Than Women?
May 4, 2011 1 CommentIn the words of the incomparable Aretha Franklin, “We’re coming out of the kitchen.”
Apparently women took this message literally.
A recent study by the Good Food Channel found one in six women struggle with the culinary craft.
The poll of 2,000 guys and gals revealed the average woman could only make around seven dishes from scratch, before reaching for a cookbook or pre-prepared meal. In comparison, our moms could whip up 25 from the top of their heads.
Nowadays one in five women can’t construct a curry, one in six can’t bake a cake and one in ten can’t boast about their roast. One in 20 of us can’t even boil an egg or prepare a hot breakfast.
Not only are we less competent chefs, we also feel our male partners can do a better job of it. More than half the women surveyed said their husbands were more capable cooks than they were.
Hoorah! Men can cook! This is good news, no?
Not necessarily.
Ability doesn’t always translate to blokes doing their fair share of the cooking. Only one in six women said their beau regularly prepared weeknight meals, while eight out of ten said their diets were repetitive due to time constraints and rising food costs.
“Everyone is increasingly pushed for time, and women in particular are finding it harder than ever to balance work and home lives,” Good Food’s Roopa Gulati said.
While it’s encouraging to see men are taking it upon themselves to learn the art of cooking, I look forward to reading the study telling me women have relinquished some of the responsibility for it.
Even if it’s only a boiled egg and we need to check the recipe to get it right, at least we’re giving it a go.
