Big Is Beautiful At H&M
May 17, 2011 1 CommentOn America’s Next Top Model, Tyra Banks always seems to have that token plus size model thrown into the mix of Twiggys. While it may be a valiant effort to represent women of all shapes and sizes, the fashion industry has been thirsting for a fashion giant like H&M to step up to the plate.
With their new Big is Beautiful collection, which is being marketed by stunning plus size model Tara Lynn, it’s clear H&M is a big brand name willing to go up to bat in the name of showcasing women’s diversity. Their new ad campaign takes a stand in challenging dominant perceptions of women.
As we should all know, stores with such strong brand names like H&M usually just don’t have the sizes to accommodate larger women. Sadly, weight and body shape determine where you can shop. You may love the threads at H&M, but you can only shop at Addition Elle, Evans, Lane Bryant, or some other store specializing in 14 plus.
There’s nothing wrong with these shops (they’ve been giving women trendy options where the made-for-skinny stores have failed), but the Big is Beautiful campaign is giving women the freedom to shop wherever they so choose.
For one of the biggest multi-national fashion retailers out there, this is huge. H&M has a large platform to say something to women around the world and, thankfully, they’re using this power for good.
In this refreshing new campaign showcasing Tara Lynn’s bodacious body in swimwear, H&M is making a significant statement: Beauty has many bodies. There’s no doubt that one of those bodies is Gisele Bundchen (the face of H&M’s last ad campaign). Tara Lynn may be different, but she’s just as gorgeous. Casting shame aside, Tara embraces her body. It’s bold and it’s beautiful.
Thanks to their trendsetting ad campaign, H&M can now be a trendsetting brand loved by all women all around the world.
