If The Pill Doesn’t Cause Weight Gain Why Am I Fat?

We all know the age old problem that keeps many away from the birth control pill: weight gain. But this “fact” is soon to be proved a myth by Ingela Lindh.

Lindh compared birth control pill poppers to other non-pill-prescribed females within their age group from ages 19 to 34. The pill-poppers did not gain any more weight than the non-pill-takers.

So wait. Are we saying here that I gained 30 pounds when I started birth control simply because of my own doing? My hips exploded, my boobs burst out of tops, and within a month or so, I quickly felt, and looked, like much more of a woman than I ever did before. I guess you could acquire a more “womanly” figure while maintaining weight, but come on. My ass grew out to the size of Texas. This does not just happen over night due to the freshman 15.

My main complaint is the idea of simply comparing to others in a similar age group. What if those non-poppers surveyed just happened to also gain weight due to other reasons other than the pill? Or, weight loss occurred for pill-poppers due to fear of weight gain and subsequent dieting. While surveying 1, 749 women may sound like a fair amount to make a conclusion like this, it is possible that weight gain occurred for other reasons.

In order to properly determine something as huge as this, I feel like a better testing idea would have been executed. Maybe one that focuses on the individual taking the pill and not their condom-toting peers? Weight gains and losses occur for a number of reasons. Sure, proving that birth control does not cause weight gain could promote more prescriptions and with them better protection. But proving it by means of this survey just does not seem fair.

While it may have been a Freshman 25 of 35 that did it to me, the stretch marks are vivid and my boobs are jugs. There is a reason for my new curves. And I still have a sneaky suspicion that the culprit is my little pink daily pill.

But I’d rather be fat than an unfit mother any day.
