More Husbands At Home Than Ever
June 20, 2011 1 CommentStay-at-home dads still may not be the norm, but they’re on the rise.
Despite sixty-five percent of Canadians holding the traditional belief that women should run the household, the number of househusbands has tripled in the past 30 years, according to Statistics Canada.
The transition to embrace a household founded on gender equality has been tough, but more men are ready and willing to be domestic gods if the situation calls for it.
More and more, couples are looking at the various factors to decide who (if anyone in particular) will proudly don the apron.
“When trying to decide which partner should stay home, take into account each other’s salaries, benefit packages and any prospective career advancements on the horizon,” advises BMO Financial Group’s Caroline Dabu, who was part of a BMO survey conducted by Leger Marketing.
As to why men are choosing to stay home in the first place, 59 percent believe it’s the triumph of gender equality within the home, 54 percent believe that more women are taking on the role of breadwinner and 31 percent think that when men lost their jobs in the recent recession they became stay-at-home dads.
What’s important is that while many women are still in charge of household duties, it’s no longer an expectation. The evolution of “Mr. Mom” may be a culmination of different social and economic factors, but we can celebrate that the tides are turning and men have no shame in holding down the fort.
