Catholic Home Welcomes Pregnant Students
June 23, 2011 No CommentsA new home for pregnant university students to live, prepare, and continue their learning in is a first, especially for the Catholic community.
Belmont-Abbey College in Charlotte, North Carolina has welcomed Catholic non-profit “Room at the Inn” to build a facility on their campus for young single women who are pregnant and wish to continue their education. One might be surprised to hear that a Catholic group is supporting and creating this home, with a ton of benefits included.
In deeply religious areas, birth control is forbidden and abortions are shunned. Thus, we have a maternity home like Belmont Abbey’s, which is open to any single pregnant student in the area of Charlotte. The facility is free for the women living in it, including room, board, and meals for up to two years. Not too shabby.
I am happy to see that a deeply Catholic community like this one has moved away from shaming unwed mothers, but I can’t help but feel like the creators of this home are saying, “You can live in our maternity home for free instead of having an abortion.” It feels a bit like pushing unwed single mothers to keep their child.
Whatever you might believe about their motivations, the maternity home is a surefire way to secure many young women’s important education while bringing a life into the world.
Obviously, this is a wonderful idea for the promotion of continuing education. Women left with single motherhood deserve to complete their education just as much as the deadbeat dads.
