Drop Dead Gorgeous: Makeovers For The Afterlife
July 14, 2011 No CommentsCosmetics brand teams up with funeral directors to beautify the afterlife.
With the way our beauty obsessed world is, this was only a matter of time. Relatively new beauty brand Illamasqua is working with funeral directors Leverton & Sons to provide makeovers for the recently deceased. Promoting the slogan, “The final act of self expression,” they are hoping to gain clientele who have taken pride in their appearance while living, so they will want to take pride in their afterlives as well.
“It’s celebration of life, and one that should be indulged for your last glamorous look,” Illamasqua says. While it is clear to see that their intentions are actually rather sentimental, the whole thing is obviously a bit creepy.
For years, though, morticians have been beautifying corpses before an open casket viewing, trying to recreate a natural look that resembles the individual when they were among the living. So I suppose it is understandable that this tradition mixed with the world’s beauty obsession would lead to this “final statement” possibility. Perfection is constantly attempted while living, with plastic surgery, thousands spent on makeup, and weight obsession, along with clothing and styling perfection. Why not continue the perfection into death?
I can appreciate the idea of offering lifelike beauty when entering the afterlife, but the whole thing does seem a bit unnecessary. Not to be the bearer of bad news, dead bodies decompose. Within a year, I could probably guarantee that any makeup would be gone along with any trace of the individual’s overall identity.
But, it is still actually a nice sentiment to doll the gal up for her final viewing if that was her thing while living. While I wish that perfection and beauty were not so desired in our world that we need a service like this, I can’t help but find it to be a nice final farewell for appearance-obsessed women of our world. If this is your sort of thing and you’ve got the dough, then why not? Enter your afterlife in the over-the-top style you loved while living.
