Women Take Their Rightful Place In The Boardroom
July 26, 2011 No CommentsUK businessmen give into demands of relentless businesswomen, allow them entrance to the sacred boardroom.
A code of conduct created by 20 leading executive search firms is now promising that 30 percent of board nominees for FTSE 350 companies will be women. “By implementing these principles and working with FTSE 350 chairs and boards, the headhunter community will help to bring more talented women to the top table, improving board effectiveness,” says Lord Davies, former business minister of the UK. The code will also help support first-time female candidates through the process.
In what should be a huge step for women in general, I cannot help but feel angered by the whole thing. Why must companies be forced into nominating female board members? With all of our attempts and pleads to be allowed a stronger presence in the business world, forcing and urging seems to be more of a slap in the face to women than a large help.
While it is obviously a tremendous feat to have more women in important companies’ boardrooms, there should be no forcing needed. But with the misogynistic idea that women are still incapable of running companies and that men are the main source of creative, financial, and overall successful endeavors, men seem to rarely take notice when a woman is clearly fit for the job.
So, we have this new code. I get it. Men have been the dominant leaders in the business world for centuries, so it is high time to force them into allowing some women into the upper ranks. But forcing seems like a bit like, “You bitches wanted this for so long, so here. Three of you can be nominated for the job. Now be happy and shut up about it.”
But I digress. This is clearly a huge step for women and a large help to the businesses of the UK. Davies said it himself, a woman’s perspective will improve board effectiveness. Wishing for women to simply be equals is most likely a pipe dream of mine, but maybe after 30 percent of boards are women, we will soon be the dominating leaders of global enterprises. Move aside, gents.
