Ex-Gay Therapy Movement Growing
August 8, 2011 No CommentsEuropeans have long prided themselves on being enlightened, advanced—some sort of social frontrunners.
But perhaps even the seemingly progressive culture of Europe can’t withstand the backlash against homosexuality being carried out by conservatives the world over.
A recent article reports gay conversion therapy is on the rise on “the Continent,” particularly in countries such as Germany and the UK.
Gay conversion therapy is usually, but not always, administered by religious groups and involves teaching gay people how to live “normal” heterosexual lifestyles.
Sadly we can no longer fob gay conversion therapy off as a bunch of lunatics preaching to themselves. Now “scientists,” employed to help people, are even getting in on the act: a recent survey revealing more than 17 percent of psychologists in the UK had attempted to change a patient’s sexuality.
The “ex-gay movement” has been sweeping across the United States for decades, but up until the past couple of years, hasn’t had a strong foothold in Europe. Unfortunately that foothold was recently strengthened by The Union of Catholic Physicians, who announced they’d found a scientific cure for homosexuality.
Some conversion therapists argue they’re merely trying to help gay people, who are at a higher risk of suicide, depression and low self-esteem than their heterosexual brothers and sisters. But to any person with a scrap of compassion in their bodies, this would say more about our homophobic society than about the benefits of such a cruel and inhumane process.
