Women Are More Than Peaks And Valleys
August 27, 2011 No CommentsEurope is known for its beautiful statues, architecture, sculpture, and art. And who tends to be the muses for such work? Well, the beautiful bodies of women, of course.
We have been the centerpiece of art, especially sculpture, for centuries. The author of a piece on female sculpture in the UK easily named more than eight famous female-inspired sculptures as just a miniature list of all that could be found. A large piece named “Northumberlandia” is the latest masterpiece to join the ranks of UK woman inspired art. It is to be 400 meters long in the shape of a female and has been created out of 1.5 tons of stone. Wow, that is one hunk of woman!
As much as I enjoy to have my form desired and used for artistic purposes, the feminist within me wants to cry out a bit. Are all of these sculptures lifting us up or simply reminding the world that females are all about beauty and our bodies? Aren’t we much more than that? Shouldn’t art imitate the life that many women are now leading, choosing her own career over becoming an artist’s muse?
Yes, we are. Being idolized by sculptors and artists everywhere for our shape is flattering, but certainly better not be all we are known for. Sure, being painted or sculpted is quite the honor, but it says nothing of us beyond our pleasant peaks and valleys. Don’t make us into pieces of meat, er, stone. Praise us for our brains and not our beautifully sculpted asses. I’m sure the statue of David feels our pain!
