Women Would Rather Die Young Than Grow Old

We all know how women choose their looks over health. They go under the knife to increase their roundness of their breasts, while others starve themselves to “perfection.” But far more innocuous beauty regimes are also to blame.

Women would rather buy skin treatments that “fight” wrinkles than shield that skin from developing cancer. In fact, many treatments, such as those promising to get rid of aging spots or whiten the complexion, actually diminish the skin’s ability to protect itself from the sun. Advertising pushes the obsession, promising results and showing examples of women who have changed drastically. But shouldn’t a woman’s skin health matter much more?

But it’s not just make-up. Many women are apparently so sickened by the thought of ruining their perfectly coiffed do’s that they don’t run or exercise at all.

“When you’re starting to exercise, you look for reasons not to, and sometimes the hair is one of those reasons,” says Dr. Regina M. Benjamin.

Maybe if there were a commercial featuring a wrinkle-free woman with skin cancer we’d would perk up and realize the risk? Nah, we’d rather look good in our coffins.
