The Monday Morning Rebel

August 31, 2011 No Comments

She’s the college fantasy: the smart girl who takes off her glasses and transforms into a super-slut. What was once the stuff of wet dreams has now become reality, but some wonder whether it is really a nightmare.

Anyone who has stepped into a frat house and survived the testosterone shock knows how the university social scene works. The boys rule and girls are expected to either play along or stay home. Equality is seemingly out of the question.

So the women making the Dean’s list must choose between attending the pimp ‘n ho party and spending a night alone watching reruns of True Blood. How is it a surprise when the hooker boots get pulled out of the closet?

Some people, like Lisa Belkin, are ashamed of the girls who give up their class act, while others argue that this is just part of the process. You may get great grades and have your sights set on saving the world, but we have all internalized the message that college is for fun.

Now, is it right that girls feel the need to be sexy in order to get into parties? No, but they know that having fun means looking hot. And frankly, some of us like wearing short skirts and getting drunk.

Smart girls learn to play by the rules. During the week that means asking pertinent questions, studying hard and making the grade, but once Friday night hits the slut feels like she needs to come out. Those are the rules.

Maybe someday we can rebel in long skirts and turtlenecks. But for now, that’s for Monday morning.
