Happy Labour Day! We Worked Hard This Year!
September 5, 2011 No CommentsLabour Day is today! A day to celebrate all of the hard workers and the yearly achievements of the average hard-working citizen.
Women have come pretty damn far from the installment of the holiday in 1882. Not only have we made strides in equality surrounding all aspects of life, we have taken some pretty large steps in the workforce. Sure, we may still only make 75 cents to the man’s dollar on our paycheques, but why whine about it? We are getting a paycheque and supporting ourselves with our own hard-earned cheddar.
Susan B. Anthony would be proud. Women are slowly earning higher positions with higher salaries, being welcomed into prestigious boardrooms and even running for President. I know I may sound a bit too excited about all of this, considering we still have a long way to go. But when you think back to the Women’s Suffrage movement of the 1800s and into the 1900s, you have to smile at our successes, especially when it comes to careers.
Condoleezza Rice was the first African-American woman Secretary of State and second ever woman. Not bad. Hillary Clinton ran for President and, I know not many like her but she counts, Sarah Palin was nearly our first female Vice President in history. We have female editors of magazines, studio executives, CEOs, and high-up political female figures. Quite the jump in equality since we won our right to vote in 1918 with the 19th Amendment.
Since the dawn of time, women have been shunned, made to feel like sex objects, neglected and faced more terrible realities. Anything other than that is obviously better, but we are clearly not about to just settle. By next Labour Day, I hope to see even more movement upwards, kicking men out of the top floor of the building and taking over even more industries.
We are not just about to sit down. Pay me less? Fine. I will work that much harder.
