Record Collecting For Girls And Other Humans
September 6, 2011 No CommentsA new book entitled Record Collecting for Girls, by Courtney E. Smith, may sound like a great idea for women who tend to be ignored by the music biz, but is it really a step forward? Does it fight against inequality, or solidify it?
It may sound silly to complain. Smith probably just thought it was a cute idea for girls to read and place next to their copy of The Care and Keeping of You, but it also could be an example of the music industry putting Baby in the corner. Why is it necessary for it to be just for girls? Makeout music? Top 5 lists? Is it telling girls what they should like and dismissing their own opinions and music choices? Feels a bit like it.
While I can appreciate a book designed for girls to explore their musical tastes, I don’t understand where gender comes into it. Women and music go hand in hand and we deserve a bit more credit. After all, we are humans with ears.
