Breaking News: Porn Not That Prevalent
September 14, 2011 4 CommentsThe internet is for porn. You’ve heard it in songs, on the news, from worrisome parents. You’ve also heard that the internet is an evil, nudity filled place just waiting to flash pussy at unsuspecting young children. Everyone watches porn, every other google search is for porn, it is an epidemic. As you may have guessed, none of these assumptions are true. They are all widely held porn myths that even I believed until a recent study proved them false.
While researching for his book A Billion Wicked Thoughts, neuroscientist Ogi Ogas found that only about 4 percent of internet sites are porn related. He also discovered that the number of erotic searches has largely decreased in the last ten years. So why do we all hype about internet porn?
The phenomenon is very similar to the myth that teens are having crazy amounts of sex, when in fact they are having less sex than their parents did. We are all very quick to believe the old “the world is going to hell” idea, especially when it has to do with sex. Sex is scary to a lot of people, whether you’re a parent worried about your child or a young person wondering about what it’s like. This fear makes us ready to believe the rumors that the world (and the internet) is becoming a scary, hyper-sexual playground.
The truth, as this study shows, is that the world is not as sex-obsessed as we think. Relax. Sure, plenty of teens have sex and plenty of people watch porn, but it is not a rampant epidemic. The world is not going to end.

I don’t know if I believe that “study.”
Any particular reason?
It just seems like every man ive ever met has a porn collection. I also feel like sex is shoved down our throats in almost everything( tv shows, magazines, etc.) Porn or not, its still sex. And an unrealistic view at that. I know the study cant be entirely correct bc of my experience. And im quite sure im not the only one.
Well, all the study says is that 4% of internet sites are porn. It might be true, considering all the blogs, Facebook pages, MySpace pages and the fact that most businesses in existence have a page as well. I don’t think the amount of porn on the internet has decreased, but it may decreased its percentage in comparison to these newer additions.
Or it could simply be his definition of porn and yours are vastly different.
